MBMC 50th ANNIVERSARY MARLIN TOURNAMENT – SEPTEMBER 28

It is past Labor Day already!

That means the MBMC 50th Annual Marlin Tournament scheduled for September 28 is almost upon us. This year has really passed quickly, probably because marlin have been close in to San Diego, many just 5 miles offshore, and have stayed around longer than in the past few years. The marlin are biting!  At least five have been caught by club members in the last few weeks.

The MBMC Board has been working hard to make this 50th a special event. We have extended the Early Bird Entry Drawing deadline to entry forms that are in our hands by September 20th. Please enter early to be included in the drawing for a marlin caster rod and reel, save a few $$ on entry fees, and help us with planning.  This year we have included a 1st and 2nd place tuna award along with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for marlin. All prizes will be awarded even if no fish are caught!!

Tournament entrants are included in a Captain’s Meeting on September 27 which includes a great meal at the Marina Village deli.  Festivities conclude with a fantastic tournament Awards Banquet on September 29 to be held at Sardina’s restaurant. In addition to the angling awards, there will be a fantastic raffle of the most sought after fishing gear, gift cards, and other goodies.  Non-anglers and family members are welcome!  See tournament entry form to purchase non-angler banquet tickets and/or tournament T-Shirts.

Please see attached form for all Entry details and Rules; or click here for 50th Marlin Tournament Entry and Rules.

It is also not too late to get in on the Jerry and Roy Lively Month-Long Marlin Tournament held through this month of September.  Entry Form and Rules can be found here: Month-Long Entry Form and Rules.

We hope to see you all there!

OOPS LINE AUGUST 2024

July has seen an improvement in both inshore and offshore fishing. The Coronado Islands have seen the best yellowtail fishing in years in terms of both size and quantity. Boat traffic has been very heavy. Big barracuda and calico bass have been making a show at the islands.  There has also been a small handful of Bluefin caught at the Islands in shallow water.

There have been some nice yellowtail and white seabass coming off the squid flats in Pacific Beach. Four white seabass were weighed in
at 33, 36, 44, and a monster 61 pounder at Dana Landing.  This is in addition to the Yellowtail and Bass fishing which has been consistent around La Jolla.

Best sand bass bite in years off of Imperial Beach.  Flyline baits all the way to dropper loops have been slaying them.

We would like to welcome new member Alex Bryant. The Board thanks you for your support.

The fish of the month went to Jim Kelley with a 41.2 lb white seabass.  Fish of the month club winners are awarded a beautiful Daiwa Saltist Reel.

The 2024 Marlin Seminar is August 24th from 12-4 pm. It will be held at Sardinas Restaurant. Ken Schilling will be our main speaker. He is a renowned record holding angler and accomplished marlin fisherman.   Larry Oberti will help in hands on knot tying and marlin lure rigging.  Bring your favorite marlin jig for rigging.  Don’t miss this seminar!  Attached is the sign up/RSVP form or you can open it here –  2024 Marlin Seminar.

September is the Jerry and Roy Lively Month-Long Marlin tournament. You will be able to sign up at the marlin seminar or on the MBMC website by clicking here – Month Long Marlin Entry and Rules.

September 27-29th will be the MBMC 50th Anniversary Marlin Tournament.  All prizes are awarded whether a marlin is caught or not. Winners will be selected by drawing from entered anglers for prize categories where no marlin qualify. Come support your club. Entry Form and Rules are attached and can be found here – 50th Anniversary Marlin Tournament Entry and Rules

Oops line July 2024

Greetings, MBMC Members!

June has come and gone. Bluefin fishing has mainly centered around tuna pens. The night bite has been the most productive. These are big fish.  Mixed grade fish have been scattered from off Colonet all the way to SCI and even West of Catalina.  Local fishing and around the Coronados have been streaky depending on finding clean water. Red tide has been an issue.  Calicos are active at La Jolla, along with occasional yellowtail or sea bass.

We want to welcome new members Mark Conklin, Jake Martines, Craig Hempel and Michael Van Zeeland to the Mission Bay Marlin club. The board hopes to meet you at our meeting and seminars.

We want to thank John White for his excellent presentation on Bluefin fishing at our last Seminar. What’s working and what’s not. Also want to thank Dana Landing Tackle Shop and Fuel Dock for all their support throughout the years.

There was no fish of the month weighed in for June. These Saltist reels are phenomenal . Let’s get out there and get those fished weighed in.  You can be a winner too!  Please also send us pictures of your catches for the website.

Get signed up for the 2024 MBMC TUNA TOURNAMENT on on July 13 and 14. You can download the Entry Form and Rules here or from our website. There will also be a yellowtail side pot.  For all the tournament rules please refer to the Entry Form and Rules. Hope to see you out there for this one.

This is followed up in August with the “What’s Hot” Tournament on the 17th & 18th, Entry Form and Rules.  Any Gamefish qualifies in this Tournament. And September 1st will be the start of the Jerry and Roy Lively Month Long Marlin Tournament.  We’ll have the entire month to tease up a marlin for this tournament. Entry Form and Rules

We will be presenting a Marlin Seminar on August 24, location to be determined.  Guest speaker will be renowned Marlin fisherman Kenny Schilling. This marlin seminar is a warm up to the Jerry and Roy Lively September Month Long Tournament and our September 28th 50th Anniversary Marlin Tournament. These are very informative seminars. As usual a generous raffle will follow.

Our BIGGEST fundraiser is this year’s 50th Annual Mission Bay Marlin Club Marlin Tournament. All of your donations help to sustain the marlin club and allow for future seminars and raffles.  Thank you for the support.

This year’s Marlin Tournament will be held September 28th. There will be a Captains meeting on the 27th. This will be held 6-8 pm at the Marina Deli. We will be served salad, Lasagna and a drink. The awards banquet will be held at Sardina’s Restaurant the 29th at 2:00 pm.
Awards and prizes will be awarded to the top anglers. As always this year’s raffle will be another very generous haul of fishing items. I have seen Ray Fear’s eyes get bigger every time he talks about the raffle he is putting together.

Let’s have a great showing. Bring your friends and family and enjoy some fishing stories.
Hope to see everybody there. If you have any ideas or requests that could make your MBMC experience better, please let us know.  We would love to hear from you.
Hope everybody has a happy and safe 4th of July.

JUNE OOPS LINE

Greetings!

We are starting to see a few more species being caught this month. Seems like bluefin are showing down around the butterfly, 60 mile bank and are heading towards San Clementi Island. The more consistent bite has been at night time.

Yellowtail have made their presence around the Coronados. This bite has been on and off again . All dependent on water temperature. There have been some yellowtail found further south on kelp patties, but not a lot of biters.  Big Bonito have been trolled up around the Coronado Canyon and in front of the 302. There has been a lot of red tide from La Jolla to Point Loma. When water is clean, calico fishing has been good.

June 22nd we will be holding our Tuna Seminar at the Dockside Deli at Marina Village. John White will be giving us all the latest intel on fishing the bluefin. As always there will be a very generous raffle held.  The seminar starts at 1:00 pm and food will be served till 3:00. Burgers and sandwiches with a drink will be available for $10.00. Hope to see everybody there. Please spread the word among your friends and fellow dock neighbors.

Mark your Calendars for the MBMC Marlin Tournament. This year it has been scheduled September 27-29.  More information to follow next Oops line.

We want to welcome all new members for the month of May.  Thank you for all your support. We are always looking for new members interested in helping out the board.

On a sad note we want to acknowledge the passing of past member Don Ware. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Don’s family from the MBMC family.

Fish of the Month for May went to Paul Himmelberger for his nice 6 pound red caught on the Encounter. The boat was captained by Ken Yasuda.

No qualifying fish were submitted by any of the Entries for the May Halibut/White Seabass Tournament.  Maybe the fishing will pick up soon.

Our Month-Long Yellowtail Tournament is on all this month (June).  Get your entries in!  Click for Entry Form and Rules. Yellowtail are showing up down the line, at La Jolla, and the Islands should start biting once the water conditions get better there!

Remember, please send photos of your fish of the month entries or any other great on the water pictures so we can get them on our website.

Hope great fishing is in for everybody this summer.
