April 2022 President’s Message

Greetings fellow MBMC members,

I hope this message finds you well as the weather warms and our fishing action starts to heat up.

Before jumping in, I wanted to throw out a quick reminder that our first tournament of 2022 takes place this coming weekend. We are hoping all our members will dust off their light tackle and come out to join us for the Bay Bass Tournament taking place in Mission Bay. As a reminder to previous emails, all member boats and shore fishing options are acceptable so come on out and enjoy some friendly competition! Entry Forms and Rules can be found on the club website and your board has made every effort to make entry and posting of catches as easy as possible. Also mentioned was the fact that “Hog Trough” measuring devices are available on Amazon for ~$8.00 if you are unable to find one at one of our local preferred tackle vendors.

Also keep in mind the MBMC Halibut/White Sea Bass Tournament is coming up on May 21/22 so make sure your night vision and bounce balls are all in proper working order!

A quick fish report to get us fired up…..sounds like the Bluefin Tuna have moved up above the border in increasing numbers. According to my intel the sport boats are seeing limits with the fish biting everything on “heavy” line (40 lb). Sounds like now is a good time to get on the fish before they smarten up as the season progresses.

Sounds like the local inshore bite is hit and miss with little coverage but those making the efforts are being rewarded. Similar story with the cod fishing.

Wanted to congratulate our March FOM winner – Billy Vitale takes home the award for a 6.2 lb red rockfish. Nice going Billy!

I wanted to take a moment to recap the 2021 MBMC Awards Banquet that was held towards the end of March at Andre’s restaurant in Bay Park. Many thanks to the board for putting that together along with all those that came out to socialize and congratulate the winners from last year. Aside from all our largest species and Oscar winners, I wanted to congratulate our early bird drawing winner, Aileen Sanchez for taking home the $200.00 gift card prize. Another raffle winner, Hugh Kollar took home the largest species $100.00 gift card award.

Some highlights from last year were the winners of the MBMC Marlin Tournament. Despite no qualifying fish being caught, I believe about everyone went home with at least one raffle prize and our three big winners taking home top prizes with the tournament awards being raffled.

  • 1st prize ($1000.00) went to Ryan Kohler
  • 2nd prize ($700.00) went to Donna Hargraves
  • 3rd prize ($500.00) went to Jose Sanchez

Aside from the above, I wanted to send out a congrats to our only 2021 tournament winner, team Encounter, for winning the rock cod tournament. All other tournament entries were returned to the entrants based on lack of entry or qualifying catches. We are all hoping to see more participation this year as the world returns to normal.

One more item to note is to inform you all that MBMC directories went out at the beginning of the month along with club decals so if you did not receive yours, feel free to let the board know via email and we will get it straightened out.

I think that about covers it for now…..looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Tight lines and big fish,

Shane Hurt  , MBMC President  – 2022

March 2022 President’s Message

Greetings fellow MBMC members.…I hope this message finds you well.

As you all know, the 2021 fishing season was celebrated this past weekend with our annual MBMC awards banquet. A special thanks to those that were able to attend and enjoy good food and camaraderie. In addition to handing out awards for member achievements, we also held a brief membership meeting to thank members that served on the 2021 board along with the many members that contributed their time throughout the year to make our club function as well as it does. A brief summary of that is as follows:

Special thanks goes out to my fellow board members Billy Vitale and Ken Yasuda who did a great job working to make the best of club events despite a year full of Covid restrictions. I also wanted to thank Trish Carlin for her tireless efforts in support of treasury responsibilities. Also a huge thank you goes to Larry Oberti for his ongoing efforts to support the club website and email distributions. Thank you to Paul Himmelberger in getting the 2021 taxes filed. A big thank you also goes out to Kent Yamada for all his effort in making the club directories a reality. And of course many thanks goes out to the many volunteers that supported events throughout the year.

As part of the membership meeting, we also confirmed your 2022 board of directors as follows. On behalf of the MBMC, I want to extend my sincere gratitude to those that stepped up to donate their time in support of making club functions flow smoothly throughout the year.

o   Shane Hurt (President)

o   Ken Yasuda (Vice President / Membership coordinator)

o   Billy Vitale (Weighmaster / Social Director)

o   Kevin Yamamoto (Tournament Co-chair)

o   Ray Fear (Tournament Co-chair)

o   Scott Paul (Secretary)

o   Jerry Lively (Treasurer)

I would also like to take a moment to send out a warm welcome to the following new MBMC members Thomas Baronner, Ray Fear, Christine Kollar, Cliff Moore, and Orion Podulka (Jr). Welcome aboard all!

Moving on, I wanted to congratulate the February FOM winner Tim Honick for his 13.8 lb Ling Cod catch. Well done Tim!

Recent fish reports have been tough to come by but it definitely sounds like the action is starting to come around. Rock fishing has been good since the season opened up on March 1st. Those putting in the time have been reaping the rewards. There have also been some reports of nice White Sea Bass being taken in tight to La Jolla. No squid yet but hopefully soon coming. And finally as I’m sure many of you have heard, the Bluefin have made their way back into the reports this week as they make their annual approach to San Diego. Time to get that tackle dusted off and load some fresh line on the reels!

In closing I wanted to remind everyone that the most fuel efficient tournament of the year is coming up towards the end of April. The Bay Bass Tournament is scheduled for the weekend of April 23/24 and we are hoping for a solid turnout. Let’s get the fishing season started with a solid turnout!!!

Until next time, tight lines and smooth seas.

February 2022 President’s Message

Greetings fellow MBMC members,

I hope this message finds you all well as we roll through winter and look forward to another year of great fishing. At this point I regretfully do not have much to report in terms of fishing. A couple things to look forward to are the lifting of Covid restrictions and of course, rock cod fishing opening on March 1st! I am told there are some changes to rock cod angling regulations (ie: limits), so be sure to take a moment to ensure you are aware of the new guidelines prior to making a trip.

I wanted to take a moment to congratulate Ken Yasuda for taking the January 2022 FOM award with an 8 lb Halibut. Well done Ken!

I also wanted to take a moment to congratulate one of our members for a recent east coast tournament win. Member Lisa Kitagawa and her team managed to crush the competition and come out on top of the 2022 IGFA Light Tackle Tournament out of Palm Beach, FL. Well done to Lisa and her team in taking the win and representing the MBMC and west coast!

Happy to report that our current club roster sits at around 54 members so just a reminder that if you or anyone you know that is planning to join MBMC, make sure to get your membership sent in asap! Your MBMC board will be holding an in-person meeting this Sunday (3/6) to decide on your 2022 board of directors going forward. Anyone interested in stepping up to support is welcome so feel free to reach out to info@missionbaymarlinclub.org for details if you would like to attend. As has been the case for the last year, the club is keenly interested in finding a person to fill the treasurer position as after many years of amazing support, Trish Carlin has stepped down to spend time with her growing family. On behalf of the club and all its members, I/we would like to thank Trish for doing an incredible job in her role.

In closing, I wanted to send out a reminder that the MBMC 2021 awards banquet will be held Saturday March 26th at Andres Restaurant in Bay Park. We hope to see you all there! Guests are absolutely welcome! Registration deadline is March 19th.

Until next time…..tight lines and smooth seas.

Regards,

Shane Hurt
